BACKGROUND: We must be honest—what we currently have in the county is an unaffordable housing policy. We have less and less affordable housing each year. Montgomery County has rightfully received national recognition and praise for its Inclusionary Zoning policy. AIM members are also proud of our accomplishments in the realm of affordable housing. But, even with our affordable housing victories, we are losing. From 2003-2005, the county lost 25% of affordable rental stock, 11,591 units, during the same time period the county built 600-800 MPDU (Moderately Priced Dwelling Units). This has led to the exile of our children, parents, grandparents, neighbors. (Affordable is defined as units with gross rents under $999 per month. National Housing Trust Foundation).

GOAL: An affordable housing program that meets the needs of county residents. 80,000 affordable rental and sales units need to be preserved or built to begin to address the county’s housing crisis.
