The Maryland Dream Law is crucial to the future of our congregation & Maryland.
We believe it is both morally right and economically sound to ensure that all of God’s children are able to obtain a quality education. Our religious traditions teach us to love our neighbor, be they foreigner, undocumented youth, or otherwise. Likewise, the commandment to honor the foreigner in our lands is the most often repeated commandment in the bible.
Some have argued that during hard economic times we must focus on “our own” children first. We believe the Maryland Dream Law does focus on our children, by providing opportunity to all of Maryland’s children. Others have said that the Maryland Dream Law provides a “handout.” This is false. The law creates a level playing field, so that talented, tax paying immigrant youth, who are prepared to work hard and sacrifice, will be able to pay the same in-state tuition rates as their high school classmates. We know that educating all of our children is a win-win. More Maryland college graduates means more taxes for our state and more tithes for our congregation.
