Alex Berland
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
he/him
A life-long Marylander, Alex grew up on Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia, MD, where he has deep family ties. In the 1970s, his grandmother decided to raise her son in Columbia, hoping to teach the value of diversity and community. Her son, in turn, made the same decision for Alex and his two brothers.
While pursuing his degree in Political Science from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Alex focused his study on the Politics of Empathy—the idea that human interdependence creates mutual obligation and shared self-interest—which he incorporates in his work and daily life. After graduating, Alex moved to Gaithersburg and worked for the USDA as a management analyst. He joined Gaithersburg Beloved Community Initiative and volunteered with AIM, helping with logistics and administration.
Alex brings a commitment to building robust, connected communities along with experience in project management, organization, and service operations to AIM. He supports staff and leaders by handling day-to-day administration to keep the team running smoothly.
In his free time, Alex enjoys hiking, crafting, cooking, reading, and writing.
