Healthy Homes + Climate Equity

At AIM, we believe that everyone deserves to breathe clean air in their homes. That’s why we are organizing for clean energy upgrades in apartments so Maryland families can breathe cleaner air in their homes and save on utility bills.

2026 Statewide Campaign

In the 2026 state legislative session as the Maryland Just Power Alliance, we’re calling on the state to commit $133 Million from the Strategic Energy Investment Fund (SEIF) to high-impact, equitable programs that directly support Marylanders’ transition to clean electric technologies. Networked Geothermal at Northwest Park Apartments

AIM is organizing a campaign to replace gas stoves and furnaces at Northwest Park Apartments with clean, electric appliances, helping families breathe healthier air, lower energy bills, and live with dignity.

Indoor Air Quality Testing

AIM’s NO2 testing team works in local apartment complexes and measures the levels of NO2 gas in residents’ homes. This gas, which comes from burning methane “natural” gas in stoves and other appliances, causes respiratory illness and harms children’s brain development. Shockingly, well over half of the apartments we tested had NO2 levels considered dangerous by the EPA after stoves had been on for 20 minutes. Residents also have mold growing in their homes due to poor ventilation and insulation.

In November 2024, AIM with the Beyond Gas coalition published a report based on our NO2 testing work, showing that over 50% of homes in Maryland had unhealthy levels of NO2 gas. Read the report here.

Our NO2 testers educate residents about how to reduce levels of harmful gas through ventilation, and are a catalyst for organizing for policies promoting cleaner energy and healthier, more efficient homes.

Our team won the “Climate Solutions for Congregations” award in 2024 and has been featured in the press for their work.

Victories

Ratepayer Protection Act

In the 2025 Maryland legislative session, AIM and the Maryland Just Power Alliance helped pass the Ratepayer Protection Act. This bill will reduce gas companies’ wasteful spending on pipelines, protecting Maryland residents from excessive utility bills and encouraging the transition to clean energy.

RENEW Act

Also as part of the 2025 Maryland legislative session, AIM and the Maryland Just Power Alliance helped pass the RENEW Act. This law will commission a study assessing the cost of the damage greenhouse gas pollution has caused for Maryland residents. It will pave the way for additional legislation which would fine major polluters and use the funds to help communities adapt to climate change.

Building Energy Performance Standards Victory

In February 2025, the Montgomery County Council voted to pass new Building Energy Performance Standards. These will require large buildings to become more energy efficient, relying more on electricity and less on gas.

2024 Statewide Victories

Thanks to our organizing, the EmPOWER Act of 2024 passed in Maryland. This act will make sure that most of the $350-million-per-year EmPOWER fund goes towards helping households and low-income apartment buildings make energy efficiency and electrification upgrades. It will help protect our families’ health and the climate by reducing indoor air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
