Organizing for Renovations at Meadow Hall Elementary School

Meadow Hall students testifying at the Council hearing, while parents, teachers, and community members look on.

This week, AIM and the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) organized over 50 parents, teachers, students, and community members from Meadow Hall Elementary School to attend a hearing asking the County Council to prioritize key renovations at Meadow Hall in this year’s capital budget.

Students testified at the budget hearing, and many parents, teachers, and students attended, as well as residents of the nearby Ingleside retirement community and other AIM leaders.

Meadow Hall, in Rockville, is experiencing persistent issues with flooding, moisture, condensation, and mold. In December, a pipe burst at Meadow Hall and flooded the fourth-grade corridor, a special needs classroom, and the gym, disrupting instruction and displacing students from learning and exercise spaces. Pipes have also burst and caused flooding at least two other times in the past five years.

The community is also concerned about a significant equity issue when these systemic, unaddressed building issues are impacting a school that is composed of 85% students of color, 69% students who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals, 43% English learners, and a significant Autism program.

The Meadow Hall PTA presented a letter with over 200 signatures to the County Council asking for these renovations.

Great work to Meadow Hall and the surrounding community for taking action to ensure that students can learn in the healthy, safe environment they deserve.
